For the past few days states have taken individual measures to lesson the spread of Covid-19. Chicago closed all restaurants and bars, New Orleans closes down Bourbon Street, but New York continues to allow masses of patrons to flock to crowed bars and cozy, hip restaurants. When Andrew Cuomo was questioned if he would be closing down New York’s restaurants and from bars or banning events over 100 persons he gave a few answers. First he stated that if he closed down New York then New Yorkers would flock to New Jersey or Connecticut. Then he added that if the national government implemented a federal lockdown and banning of unnecessary travel, much like Italy.
In Italy where the death toll hit 892 deaths within 72 hours, the country remains on lockdown. Only certain persons are allowed out in public and only to travel to grocery stores, medical facilities, commute to work and banks. Spain and France recently followed Italy’s suit by closing down art museums and cafés. Spain’s government plans on imposing tight emergency restrictions on people’s movements nationwide. Still, New York remains the most infected state in the nation and while Roechelle remains on lockdown with the National Guard remains situated, aiding the city.
Monday afternoon President Trump tweeted that he had just spoken to governor Cuomo and that the governor ‘has to do more’. This comes after multiple media addresses from Cuomo begging the president to do more and administer a federal level lockdown. Trump has repeatedly addressed opposing persons through his Twitter account, consistently singling them out and taking them down via a tweet. Cuomo nearly immediately responded telling the president that he needs to do something and that he's supposed to be the one in charge.
President Trump also informed states that they need to find extra medical devices like breathing apparatus and oxygen tanks to extra hospital beds and that they shouldn't wait for the federal government to aid them. Many cities along with their leaders remain furious as there is still a lack of testing kits, leaving us unaware of how many people are actually walking around infected.
Businesses in states that don't have curfews or restaurant restrictions are left in the dark as to what to do. New Jersey isn't planning on closing down their bars yet, Monday afternoon they imposed a 9pm curfew on the city, but bars, bowling alleys and entertainment venues like movie theaters remain open. The question is when will the federal government step in? Will it be too late? And most of all, will we have any warning?
