George Floyd was killed by Derek Chauvin on Monday, Memorial Day. Since then there has been a slew of new information reining in, riots all over the country that have led to several shootings and one death. Derek Chauvin was taken into custody by Minneapolis police on Friday afternoon amidst crowds continuing to gather in Minneapolis and other parts of the country such as Pheonix, AZ who is planning to march Friday evening after being stopped Thursday.
On Friday afternoon Fox News reporter, Mike Tonbin, confirmed that Chauvin and Floyd may have known each other previous to the attempted Memorial Day arrest that resulted in Floyd’s death. The two worked overlapping shifts at a Minneapolis nightclub, El Nuevo Rodeo club on Lake Street, according to Maya Santamaria and reported by ABC News.
Derek Chauvin worked at El Nuevo Rodea for 17 years as an off-duty officer, according to Santamaria. "They were working together at the same time, it's just that Chauvin worked outside and the security guards were inside." Santamaria was unable to confirm if the two knew one another before the Memorial Day incident even though they worked the same shifts.
"He sometimes had a really short fuse and he seemed afraid whenever there was an altercation, he always resorted to pulling out his mace and pepper spraying everybody right away, when I felt it was unwarranted," Santamaria, former owner of El Nuevo explained about Chauvin.
While Chauvin is facing third degree murder and manslaughter charges. It’s unclear that if the two knew one another or how that could change any charges that will be brought onto Chauvin.
