A while back I become obsessed with creating a great Monte Crtiso, and after a few attempts of batters and breads, I came up with what I can say, is the best Monte Cristo. OKAY, maybe second after Disney's Blue Bayou.

I don't even know how I became so obsessed with Monte Cristo sandwiches, but one day I decided to mash a few recipes together and ended up with these insanely delicious sandwiches that are perfect any time of the day! Here's a little background before we get started :

A Monte Cristo sandwich is a fried ham and cheese sandwich, a variation of the French croque-monsieur. In the 1930s–1960s, American cookbooks had recipes for this sandwich under such names as "French sandwich", "toasted ham sandwich", and "French toasted cheese sandwich". Swiss cheese is typically used.

Boysen-Raspberry Dipping Sauce Recipe Below!

Grocery List

1 Loaf of French Brioche Bread

6oz Sliced Honey Ham

6oz Sliced Turkey

1/2 cup grated Gouda or Gruyere cheese (or sliced is okay)

6oz Swiss cheese

2-4 tbsp mayonnaise

2-4 tbsp Dijon or spicy brown mustard

1 cup Frying oil (canola, peanut, veggie) of preference , I used vegetable.

1 egg

2/3 cups of water

2/3 cups of flour

1 1/3 tsp baking powder

1/2 - 1 tbsp powdered sugar to dust

Dipping Sauce

1/4 cup Boysenberry Syrup

1/4 cup Raspberry Jam

Cooking Instructions

1. Heat oil in pan ( it should fill up half of the pan, no more!)

2. You'll need 2 1/2 slices of bread per sandwich, so slice every other slice in the loaf in half.

3. Coat one side of the full slices of French Brioche with mayonnaise.

4. Coat the 1/2 slices in mustard on each side.

5. Stack Gruyere or Gouda on the full slice of bread on the mayonnaise side, then add a slice of turkey, ham and Swiss cheese. OR follow this:

1 slice Brioche (mayonnaise side up)

1 slice Gouda/Gryere cheese

1 slice turkey

1 slice ham

1 slice Swiss cheese

1/2 slice Brioche with mustard 1 slice Gouda/Gryere cheese

1 slice turkey

1 slice ham

1 slice Swiss Cheese

1 slice Brioche (mayonnaise side down)

6. Top that with the 1/2 slice of Brioche with mustard and again stack cheese, turkey, ham and cheese and top with the full slice of Brioche, mayonnaise side down, touching the cheese.

7. Repeat with remaining bread and then press each sandwich down until it's about 1/3 the size of the original sandwich.

8. Mix the baking powder with the flour on a flat plate.

9. Beat the egg in the flattest bowl with high sides.

10. Dip each side of the sandwiches in the egg, making sure the coat all of it, including the crust.

11. Dip the sandwiches in flour, making sure to coat each side including the crust.

12 . Place each sandwich in the pan with oil on medium (I did one at a time and placed the cooked sandwiches on a plate with a covering on the stove to keep them warm) and cook each side until lightly browned (this depends on your stove, pan and level of heat that the burner gives off) about 2-3 minutes. Make sure to turn sandwiches at the end to cook the mixture on the crusts.

13. Cut as you like, shift powdered sugar through a strainer to lightly dust and serve with the elder/raspberry sauce or more mustard.

Boysen-Raspberry Dipping Sauce

Normally the Monte Cristo is served with an lingonberry sauce but with that being scarce most people make a red berry dipping sauce using either strawberries or raspberries.

Grocery List

Boysenberry Syrup

Raspberry Jam

Just mix equal parts and serve in separate dipping dishes!
